Mark’s Story: The Bench that Saved a Life Every movement has its origin story, and Cracked Armour is no exception. Mark Long, a dedicated police officer since 2002, found himself facing a personal war that threatened to consume him. On July 7th, 2017, Mark sat on a bench in the yard of his children’s school, contemplating a decision that would alter the course of his life. A type A personality and a high achiever, Mark had always believed that hard work and dedication could conquer any challenge. However, the birth of his first child marked the beginning of a subtle but profound shift. He started withdrawing from the things that once brought him joy, isolating himself from family, friends, and social engagements. As the weight of the trauma he witnessed in his profession compounded, Mark’s mental health deteriorated. Sleep became elusive, confusion and fog clouded his mind, and he grappled with a profound sense of loneliness and fear that he couldn’t articulate. Seeking professional help, Mark faced a misdiagnosis initially, highlighting the complexities of mental health in high-stress professions. The turning point came when Mark was diagnosed with PTSD, a diagnosis that should have paved the way for healing and support. However, the reality was different. Despite the initial support, Mark’s pay and benefits were abruptly cut off, and he was pressured to return to work prematurely. The very institution he had dedicated his life to had turned its back on him. The struggle persisted, but Mark’s family and friends rallied around him, determined to save a life on the brink. Letters and pleas for help to his police department went unanswered. It was a harrowing time, culminating in Mark’s decision to end his life on that fateful bench. Recognition of the signs by his spouse and a timely intervention from a trusted friend led Mark to the hospital, where he spent three days in a Mental Health Ward. This experience, rather than a source of shame, became the turning point that ultimately saved his life. Mark’s journey of healing took him to California, where he enrolled in a program for PTSD run by Veterans and First Responders. Surrounded by individuals who understood the struggle, he forged lifelong connections and found strength in shared experiences. It was here that the seeds of Cracked Armour were planted – a testament to resilience, hope, and the belief that no one should face the darkness alone. Cracked Armour: A Symbol of Resilience Out of Mark Long’s journey emerged Cracked Armour, a symbol of resilience and a lifeline for those navigating the challenging terrain of PTSD, TBI, and Mental Health issues. The initiative stands as a beacon of hope, a reminder that even in the darkest moments, there is a community ready to offer support and understanding. Cracked Armour exists not only because of the passion and dedication of its founder but also because of the love and support Mark received from his family, friends, and fellow warriors. It’s a testament to the power of community, compassion, and the unwavering commitment to breaking the stigma surrounding mental health. In the scenic landscapes of Nova Scotia, where the sea meets the sky, Cracked Armour is forging a path toward healing and awareness. Mark Long’s story is not just an individual journey; it’s a collective narrative of strength, survival, and the belief that, together, we can overcome the battles that haunt our minds. As Cracked Armour continues to grow and make a significant impact, it invites everyone to join the army of warriors, wear the emblem proudly, and stand together against the silent struggles that so many face. In Mark’s words, “This helps me just as much as it helps you.” Cracked Armour is more than a cause; it’s a community united by the shared mission of breaking the silence and fostering a space where healing can thrive. Cracked Armour’s Mission The essence of Cracked Armour is encapsulated in its mission: raising awareness for PTSD, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), and Mental Health issues while providing vital support to those grappling with these challenges. The initiative has taken a unique approach, creating an “Army of warriors” who proudly wear Cracked Armour gear. The symbolism is clear – no one fights alone, and healing can occur within a trusted and supportive community. A significant portion of the proceeds from the sale of Cracked Armour Gear is dedicated to the development of the “Returning Warriors Ranch” in Bishopville, Nova Scotia. This visionary project aims to establish a PTSD PEER LED recovery program for all Canadian warriors facing these battles. It’s a beacon of hope for those who have sacrificed so much for their country. The online presence of Cracked Armour on Facebook and Instagram, along with its official website, serves as a virtual stronghold where warriors and supporters come together to share stories, find solace, and build connections. The community extends beyond geographical boundaries, creating a network of empathy and understanding. www.crackedarmour.com
