In 1971, Graham made a significant move by acquiring the store that the Graves family still occupies today.
In 1979, Graham’s Son Gordon and his wife Cathy, decided to make Bridgetown their home. Graham imparted invaluable lessons about the retail business to Gordon, emphasizing that the customer is always right and the importance of supporting local growers and the community.
In 1987, Cathy joined the store, and they worked tirelessly, juggling multiple jobs, including delivering the Chronicle Herald every morning for a decade.
In 1992, Gordon and Cathy took ownership of the store, endeavoring to carry forward the traditions instilled by Graham.
Today, the store is in the capable hands of their son, Chad, their daughter, Sarah, and Cathy herself. Over the years, they’ve transformed the store’s facade and expanded their offerings, adding a liquor store and enlarging their in-store bakery.
Their dedication and commitment to the community have not gone unnoticed.
In 2006, they received the Arnold Rand Award at the Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers Conference in Toronto, and they’ve been recognized with the Award of Merit every year since then for Independent Grocer of the Year.
Despite the challenges posed by big box stores, the Graves family remains steadfast in their commitment to providing the best service, freshest locally sourced products, and fair prices to their customers. The Graves family’s hope is to continue this tradition, celebrating their 70th anniversary this year.
Bridgetown has been more than a location for the Graves family; it’s been a place to grow, thrive, and create lasting memories.
The Graves family’s grocery store stands as a beacon of resilience, dedication, and community spirit. Their journey is a testament to the enduring bond between a family, a business, and a community. Here’s to 70 years of serving Bridgetown, and may the legacy continue for generations to come.
