The Genesis: From Personal Struggle to Collective Strength Thirteen years ago, faced with a daunting cervical cancer diagnosis, Lisa found herself grappling not only with health concerns but also with the looming financial strain of being unable to work. Drawing from her own experience as a past recipient of Income Assistance, she envisioned a lifeline for families like hers – a haven against food insecurities.
The seeds of Annapolis Valley Frugal Moms were planted during a kitchen table conversation with her best friend, Tasha. Inspired by tales of extreme couponing on TLC, Lisa and Tasha embarked on a mission to discover if such strategies could be adapted to the Canadian landscape. Thus began a journey of research, experimentation, and the birth of a community dedicated to frugal living.
Evolution: From Coupons to Community Building
The group's early days involved not only sharing couponing tips but also empowering members with knowledge about sales, prices at local farm stands, and budget-friendly shopping. From humble beginnings, the group, highlighted in a 2011 newspaper article, has burgeoned into a vibrant community of over 13 thousand members.
Embracing the ethos of "Moms helping other moms," the group expanded beyond couponing to address broader community needs. Lisa and her team ventured into food rescue initiatives, pop-ups, and giveaways, making a substantial impact by supporting 100 families weekly in 2022, saving approximately 200,000 lbs of food from going to waste.
Creating a Support Ecosystem
Fueling the community's growth, Lisa welcomed a diverse team of 17 members, each contributing unique strengths. The team's expertise spans from frugal living and couponing to canning, dehydrating, and even search and rescue operations. Together, they manage seven Facebook sites, hosting live videos and offering invaluable support to keep the community thriving.
Charitable Milestones: From Assistance to Registered Charity
In an ambitious leap forward, the Annapolis Valley Frugal Moms Society transitioned from assistance to official recognition as a registered charity in March 2023. This significant milestone has propelled their impact to new heights, enabling the group to serve almost 200 people weekly, rescuing almost 280,000 lbs of food to date.
Holiday Giving and Future Aspirations
As the festive season unfolds, the society is gearing up for its annual Christmas hampers initiative, aiming to bring joy to 150 seniors and 200 families. Lisa and her dedicated team are accepting donations for food and toys, ensuring that no one is left without during the holidays.
Looking ahead, Lisa envisions a future where the society continues to adapt and thrive. The collective spirit of Annapolis Valley Frugal Moms remains unyielding, always thinking ahead to the next task at hand.
In the words of Lisa, "My team is golden. It's a lot of work, but we all have faith that everything will go as planned." As the Annapolis Valley Frugal Moms Society stands at the crossroads of another successful year, the message is clear: stay true to yourself
