This non-profit, community-based organization has been serving the community since 1994, and we are excited to shine a spotlight on their journey.
Family Matters had modest beginnings, starting as a pilot project through the Community Action Program for Children (CAPC) with Health Canada. The program took root in the coordinator's basement before finding a home in Annapolis Royal. In a heartwarming gesture, the town of Annapolis Royal generously donated an old house for the center's use, for the symbolic price of one dollar per year, accompanied by a grant for cleaning and painting.
In 2004, due to financial considerations, the center moved to Bridgetown and, subsequently, in 2009, found its current residence in Lawrencetown. The Lawrencetown Education Centre offers an entirely accessible space, ensuring that Family Matters is easily accessible to all.
What sets Family Matters apart is its dedication to providing families with free early learning educational programs that not only promote early literacy but also foster social development opportunities for pre-school children. They go above and beyond by offering invaluable support to the children's parents and caregivers.
While the organization primarily focuses on families with pre-school children, exciting new programs are on the horizon that will extend their reach to include families with school-aged children.
The core mission of Family Matters is to develop, coordinate, and deliver programs, services, and support that have been proven to promote the health and well-being of children aged 0 to 6 years in Annapolis County. To ensure that they serve the families of Annapolis County effectively, Family Matters has established a network of satellite locations, extending their reach to Bridgetown, Middleton, Annapolis Royal, Wilmot, and Cornwallis, in addition to their home office in Lawrencetown.
But their commitment doesn't stop there. Family Matters also serves as a Family Home Child Care Agency, offering a unique opportunity for those interested in caring for their children while welcoming others into their homes. If you're considering this path, don't hesitate to reach out at 902-584-2210.
Additionally, Family Matters is the proud host of a Parenting Journey Home Visiting Program. Here, their dedicated staff works one-on-one with families, setting goals and working together to achieve them, providing invaluable support for parents on their parenting journey.
Valley Living Magazine is thrilled to shed light on the incredible work being done by Family Matters in Annapolis County, Nova Scotia. They are not just an organization but a symbol of hope, support, and community for families across the region.
